Cleveland, like many ‘rust belt’ cities, too often doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Craftsmanship and artistry aren’t exclusive to what most commonly consider ‘art.’ Artisans of the Land is our short-form documentary series by Clockwork 9 featuring local entrepreneurs who found success for themselves by bringing artistry into every decision they make.

WALK THE HILDEBRANDT

Meet the Artists during the “Walk the Hildebrandt” event, held in conjunction with Destination Cleveland.
In all my years of teaching pottery I have found that after most students and aspiring potters
learn the core forms of: bowl, cylinder, and plate, they often get stuck on scaling up to larger
forms and bigger ideas.
In this workshop we will consider how simple forms can work together to make something larger. For example, how two bowls can be attached to create a moon jar. From here, a slender cylinder
can then be added to that moon jar to make an even taller vessel. With the simple addition to
this vessel of a long handle, you have now created an ancient Greek Lekythos for storing olive
oil. This form and others will be explored opening your mind to new possibilities!
